  • Flattening turns selected fields or annotations into page content.
  • A retained visual signature does not guarantee preserved cryptographic evidence.
  • A flattened derivative should be distinguished from the signed original.

What is a flattened PDF?

PDF flattening converts selected interactive elements or annotations into ordinary page content. Their visible appearance can remain, while the original fields or annotations no longer function as separate interactive objects. The exact scope depends on the tool and options.

Flattening is not necessarily the same as rasterizing every page into an image.

Does flattening secure or redact a PDF?

No. Removing interactivity is not a universal protection against editing or disclosure. A flattened page can still be altered with suitable tools. Flattening also does not reliably remove sensitive underlying information merely because a box or shape appears over it; redaction addresses removal for disclosure.

What happens to a digital signature?

A visible signing mark may survive a conversion while its cryptographic evidence does not. Rewriting or flattening signed content can remove or invalidate signature information. A file that looks the same should not automatically replace the signed original.

PDF Association’s technical note explains signed byte ranges and incremental updates. Some permitted later actions can preserve earlier signed data; that does not mean a flattening operation is safe for every signed PDF. The result depends on the operation, document structure and applicable permissions.

How should the resulting copy be treated?

Preserve the original with its signing evidence. If a flattened copy is needed, identify it as a derivative and check what changed before relying on it. Include both versions in the appropriate retention process rather than assuming reduced interactivity establishes legal validity or a permanent archive.

A Common Case: Preparing a noninteractive reference copy

A Washington consulting firm might need a noninteractive reference copy of a completed client form. Staff would keep the signed original and associated evidence, then identify any flattened output as a derivative rather than assume that an unchanged-looking mark proves the original signature remains verifiable.

FAQs

Does flattening a PDF make it impossible to edit?

pijl in navigatiebalk

No. It removes the selected interactivity, but suitable tools can still change page content.

Does a visible signature survive with its original validation after flattening?

pijl in navigatiebalk

Not necessarily. Its appearance may remain while signature information is removed or invalidated; retain and check the original signed file.
