Electronic Signature API: Requests, Fields and Events

Electronic-signature API

A programmatic interface connecting an application to supported electronic-signature operations, distinct from the user interface and the signer’s consent.

  • An API connects software operations: creating a request does not mean a recipient has signed it.
  • API credentials and signer checks differ: authorized software access is not the recipient’s identity or consent.
  • Use the current API contract: supported operations, permissions, limits and error handling are provider-specific.

What is an electronic signature API?

An electronic signature API is a programmatic interface through which software requests supported operations from an electronic-signature service. An application can use it to prepare documents, define recipients, initiate requests and retrieve available results without reproducing every step manually in the provider’s dashboard.

In a REST-style signing API, an application sends authenticated HTTP requests to documented endpoints and receives structured responses. An SDK is a software library that helps call an API; a prebuilt connector packages selected operations for another application. Neither term means every service operation is available.

Which parts of the workflow does it connect?

The Sign.Plus official API quickstart illustrates distinct stages: create an envelope, add a document, define recipients and signing steps, place an annotation and send the request. Creating the request and completing it are different events.

Related integration concepts answer different questions:

  • Embedded signing concerns where the recipient sees and completes the signing interface.
  • Signing webhooks notify an application about supported events after a request is initiated.
  • Document text tags can describe fields in systems that explicitly recognize their syntax.
  • An AI connector lets an assistant invoke supported operations through an authorized integration.

What do credentials and metadata establish?

API authentication authorizes software access. It does not by itself authenticate the document’s recipient or prove their consent to sign. Keep private credentials on the appropriate trusted application side; giving a browser access to a signing interface does not justify exposing a production secret.

Identifiers and your application’s own correlation data can help associate a signing request with a client or transaction. Their presence is not proof of the underlying information’s accuracy, nor permission to disclose the document to unrelated users.

What defines a dependable integration?

The current API contract determines permissions, request limits, supported fields, error responses and any retry or idempotency behavior. An ambiguous timeout should not automatically lead to sending a duplicate agreement. Check the service’s actual result and documented handling rules.

A sandbox is a testing environment, not proof that the same credentials, entitlement or behavior are ready for production. For Sign.Plus availability and developer access, see the Sign.Plus electronic-signature API. Legal suitability still depends on the document, jurisdiction and signing process, rather than the fact that an API call succeeded.

A Common Case: Connecting an insurance application to a portal

A Florida insurance agency considering a client portal can use a supported API to prepare an application and associate its request identifier with the client record. The portal should confirm the actual signing result before changing its business status, rather than equating a successful send operation with approval.

FAQs

Is an e-signature API the same as embedded signing?

ナビゲーションバーの矢印

No. An API provides programmatic operations; embedded signing concerns presenting the recipient’s signing interface inside an application or website.

Does a successful API response mean the document is signed?

ナビゲーションバーの矢印

It means the requested operation returned its documented result. Creating or sending a request is distinct from completion by the required recipients.

Does API authentication replace signer authentication?

ナビゲーションバーの矢印

No. API credentials authorize software access, while signer authentication concerns the person accessing or acting on the signing request.
