Signature Delegation: Reassignment and Authority

Signing delegation and reassignment

Redirecting a signing request to another person, distinct from granting legal authority to act for someone else.

  • Reassignment redirects an action to a replacement signer.
  • The new signer acts in their own identity, not as the original person.
  • Workflow permission and legal signing authority are separate questions.

What is signature delegation?

In an electronic signing workflow, signature delegation commonly describes redirecting an assigned signing action to another person. Reassignment of a request is not a grant of legal authority or permission to impersonate the original recipient.

What changes when a request is reassigned?

The replacement recipient should receive the request in their own identity. Sign.Plus documents an Assign to Someone Else action that supplies the replacement’s name and email and notifies the document owner. Availability depends on the workflow and its verification restrictions.

Do not treat forwarding an invitation as equivalent to a supported reassignment. The access link and signing session may be tied to the intended recipient and required checks.

What should the sender verify?

Confirm that the new person is the appropriate signer and that their recipient role and place in the signing order still fit the process. Authority for the underlying agreement must be checked separately; a reassignment notification does not establish it.

A Common Case: Replacing an unavailable representative

Imagine a Massachusetts consulting firm whose original contract recipient is unavailable. Where the workflow permits reassignment, a replacement could receive the request under their own name. The sender would confirm the replacement’s authority before treating the redirected request as appropriate.

No. Availability depends on the platform, workflow and verification restrictions. Do not assume that forwarding the invitation performs a valid reassignment.
