Remote Digital Signature: Remote Key Operations

Remote cryptographic signature creation

A signature created through a remotely operated signing key or service, distinct from a person simply signing away from the office.

  • Remote cryptographic signing describes where the key operation is performed.
  • Signer location and remote key custody are different concepts.
  • A remote signing service is not automatically a qualified signature service.

What is a remote digital signature?

A remote digital signature is created through a cryptographic signing operation performed by a remote service or system. “Remote” describes the key operation and service architecture, not merely the signer’s physical location.

A person can sign from another city using a locally held key. Conversely, a person sitting in their office can authorize a remote service to use a signing credential. These are different meanings of remote signing.

How are authorization and key custody separated?

The signing key may remain within the service’s protected environment while an application submits the material needed for the signing operation and obtains authorization. ETSI TS 119 432’s remote-signing protocols distinguish the driving application, signing credential and signature creation service.

The relevant controls include which credential is used, what data or hashes are authorized, and how the action is bound to the intended signer. The service’s location alone does not establish the person’s identity or authority.

Is remote signing always qualified?

No. Remote cryptographic creation is an architecture, not a guarantee of QES. The Commission’s trust-services explanation treats management of remote qualified creation devices as a specifically defined qualified service.

A protected cryptographic module or remote credential label does not by itself meet every qualified-certificate, device and service condition. Assess the actual workflow rather than infer qualification from the word “cloud.”

How is the result checked?

The resulting signature still needs validation against its data, certificate trust and applicable policy. Remote creation does not remove the need to preserve the original signature evidence or explain what the user actually authorized.

A Common Case: Understanding a cloud-signing proposal

A Nevada professional-services firm evaluating a cloud-signing workflow might ask where the cryptographic key operation occurs and how each use is authorized. An employee’s ability to sign while traveling would not, by itself, explain the service’s key custody or qualified-signature status.

FAQs

Is signing from home always a remote digital signature?

Seta da barra de navegação

Not in this technical sense. The term concerns a remote cryptographic key operation, not simply the signer’s location.

Does a cloud signing service always produce QES?

Seta da barra de navegação

No. Qualification depends on specific certificate, creation-device and service requirements, not the remote architecture alone.
