  • A signing certificate binds a public key to a subject under an issuer’s policy.
  • It does not contain the private signing key or grant company signing authority.
  • A completion report and a qualified certificate are different concepts.

What is a digital signature certificate?

A digital signature certificate is a public-key certificate used in a certificate-based signing process. It associates a public key with an identified subject and carries issuer and usage information. The signature on a document is created with the corresponding private key; the certificate is not that private key.

NIST’s certificate definitions describe the binding between a subject and public key. “Signing certificate” or “digital ID” can be used in application interfaces, but the exact credential and its contents should be checked.

What does an X.509 certificate contain?

Typical information includes the subject, issuer, serial number, validity period, public key and extensions describing permitted uses or constraints. The issuer signs that information. The certificate’s identity details reflect its issuance policy; they do not automatically establish a person’s authority to sign for an organization.

Certificate versus signing report

A certificate of completion is a report about a signing process. It is a different artifact from the cryptographic credential. Likewise, not every signing certificate is a qualified certificate under EU eIDAS.

How is the certificate relied on?

The recipient evaluates its issuer path, intended purpose and status at the relevant time as part of digital-signature validation. A familiar name in a certificate or the presence of an X.509 file does not by itself complete those checks.

A Common Case: Checking who a credential identifies

A Florida property-management company might receive a vendor agreement with a signing certificate. Its team could check the subject and issuer while separately confirming the representative’s authority, rather than treat a named certificate holder as automatically empowered to bind the vendor.

FAQs

Does a signing certificate contain the private key?

Flèche de la barre de navigation

The public-key certificate does not. A separate file container may hold a certificate together with private-key material, so distinguish the certificate from its packaging.

Is a digital signature certificate the same as a completion certificate?

Flèche de la barre de navigation

No. The first is a cryptographic credential; the second is a report about the signing process.
