  • Recipient roles specify actions; signing order specifies timing.
  • Receiving a copy does not automatically mean signing or approving.
  • A software role does not grant legal signing authority.

What are e-signature recipient roles?

E-signature recipient roles define what each participant is expected to do in a signature request. A signer completes assigned actions; a copy recipient receives the document without automatically becoming a signing party. The sender prepares and dispatches the request.

Which responsibilities should be distinguished?

  • Sender: prepares and dispatches the request; the sender can also be a signer if assigned that action.
  • Signer or signatory: completes the assigned signing actions in their own identity.
  • Copy recipient: receives the document as configured, rather than automatically signing or approving it.
  • In-person host: facilitates a supported shared-device session. Hosting does not automatically make that person a signer or legal witness.

Role, order and authority are different

A role determines the requested action. Signing order determines when that action becomes available. Neither creates legal authority to bind a company.

Sign.Plus supports signing and copy-recipient roles. Define the action each person needs to perform, then match the recipient assignments to the business approval process.

Why does assignment matter?

Assign each of the document fields to the intended participant. A copied manager’s receipt should not be mistaken for the manager’s signature or approval. Check the required people and actions before sending, especially where the same person prepares the document and also signs it.

A Common Case: Separating a client signer from a copy recipient

For a California insurance agency’s service agreement, the client might need to sign while an account manager receives a copy. Assigning the two roles separately keeps receipt from being mistaken for a required signature or an internal approval.

FAQs

Is a copy recipient a signer?

Flèche de la barre de navigation

Not automatically. Receiving the document and signing it are different actions, determined by the assigned role and fields.

Does a signer role grant authority to represent a company?

Flèche de la barre de navigation

No. A software assignment identifies the requested action; legal authority to act for the company is a separate question.
